A long day of repairing cars was behind me. The only chore left was a trek to the street to pick up the day’s mail. I headed to the mailbox, sidestepping the chuck holes and nodding a greeting to the mallards in the pond east of the long gravel drive. I was grateful to God; it had been a good day filled with God’s care and loving presence upon me, and upon the auto repair business I had set up on the 4 acres next to my home.
The handful of envelopes that I tossed onto the kitchen table fanned out like a deck of cards, and one caught my eye. A letter from Rusty!
Ah, Rusty . . . seemed like the police had been perpetually on his tail when he was a teen. How many times had he been caught stealing? I had lost count, despite standing supportively by his side before the judge on every occasion. Those troubled days had passed, I thought. Was he okay?
I ripped into the envelope.
“Dear Jeremy,” he started. “Here are some pictures of the family. Holly, the kids and I are doing fine. I am working hard at the dealership and they are real happy with my work. They are going to send me for some more training soon and there is talk of a pay raise.
“Jeremy, I don’t know how to thank you for all the sacrifices you made for me through the years. It seemed no matter how bad I was, you were always there to love me through my troubles. I really don’t think that Mom, Dustin, Vicky and I would have made it without you. We were so messed up as a family, barely even surviving. Jeremy, you took a family that wasn’t and made us into one. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do even now for me, Holly and the kids.
“We Love You, Rusty”
I got all choked up. I love you too, Rusty, I thought, mopping the back of a still greasy hand across damp cheeks. You were worth every moment for the joy God has brought me now.
Jeremy is just Jeremy, an everyday Christian with a rough start to life.
