The Tiller

Charged to the helm one dark eve
Never more pleased this man could be
Tiller in hand
My spirit lulled by the sounds of the sea

Ah yes a man I am

Two others below
Let it be so
It is I alone who will guide this vessel
A direction she should go

Night had slipped in with a following seas
A starboard heel
The gunnels awash
Who was in charge
A man of courage
I at the watch

This tiller was not the first my hand had seen
In the world great wisdom and knowledge
I for myself had gleaned

The storms of life had come and gone
In them I stood to answer the call
With these two hands
Surely
I could never fall

A hand on the tiller
One on my knee
The one from above
Gathered the seas

With the breath of God the great winds blew
The sails they filled
The seas arose
I grasp the tiller
With not one hand but two

Upon my face the sting of the sea
Upon myself I surely did lean
It was then I saw understanding flee
A storm had come that was way beyond me

I cried out to the one who had gathered the seas
Oh God hear my plea
Have mercy on these

Above the roar of a mighty wind
I heard these words deep within
Do you trust me
Yes said I
Not about to give in

As fear took its place on that frothy black night
Wrestling the tiller my knuckles turned white
Deep in my heart I heard Him again
Do you trust me
Yes said I about to give in

The bow plunging deep with a shuddering heave
No room in the cockpit to fall to ones knee
I looked toward Heaven with one last plea

I heard Him then speak clearly within
Do you trust me
Yes cried I
And really gave in

I gave God the tiller of life that night
For He is the helmsman
Of this mans life

His hand on the tiller
Skies of gray
His hand on the tiller
Skies of blue
Staying the course for this man to be true
